Dawn Sapp, the associate superintendent of curriculum and instruction for the St. Johns County School District, said students are exposed to local history through field trips in fourth grade, when they learn state history. Students also have a chance to participate in the annual Martin Luther King essay and poster contest, hosted by the St. Johns Education Association (SJEA) and advanced students can compete in the National History Fair.
In keeping with King’s vision of service to the community, the NAACP will be collecting new socks, hats and gloves for youths at the Ice Park and at the Gillioz, the release said. Cash and checks made out to NAACP Springfield Branch will also be accepted. T-shirts to benefit NAACP youth programs will be available for $15.
Springfield Public Schools' NAACP Martin Luther King Essay Contest and art contest winners will be recognized at the program.
Elementary students were asked to submit an artistic note card that was reflective of this year's theme, "Your Life Your Choice: Our Voices Matter." The winning notecards will be available for purchase. This year’s winners are: Jaamia Mims, Campbell Elementary School; Sabastian Chandler, Sunshine Elementary School; Evan Carson, Sunshine Elementary School; and Mason Alen, Sunshine Elementary School.
Awards for best essays or videos will be awarded to Reed Academy middle school students Spencer Robarge, Knowianna Cortes, and Kenna Johnson, eighth grade.
